David Loukidelis

David Loukidelis has been British Columbia’s Information and Privacy Commissioner since 1999. He is responsible for overseeing compliance with BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Personal Information Protection Act, and the Lobbyists Registration Act.

David has an extensive background in access and privacy issues, having practised in the area since 1994 and before that was a founding member of BC’s Freedom of Information and Privacy Association.

 

David is a member of the Privacy Advisory Committee of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), a member of the Ethics, Law and Social Issues Advisory Committee for the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Ageing, a long-term CIHR research initiative, and participated in the APEC Data Privacy Sub-Group’s work on the recently-adopted Asia Pacific privacy framework. David is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Victoria, where he teaches access and privacy law. 

 

David received his LLB from York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School in 1984 and his BCL from the University of Oxford in 1987. He served as a law clerk to a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1985. Before beginning his legal studies, he received an MA in English language and literature (medieval studies) from the University of Edinburgh in 1980.
