Superintendent Thompson was born near Montreal, Quebec and received his early education in Quebec, Ontario and Europe. He joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1972 and, after basic recruit training in Regina, Saskatchewan, he served in a variety of federal and provincial policing units across the country. In 2000, Superintendent Thompson received his commission and was transferred as Inspector to the position of Officer in Charge, Special Projects within Information and Identification Services. In June 2003, Superintendent Thompson assumed responsibility for the Canadian Criminal Records Information Services and National Missing Children’s Services, both of which are National Police Service entities. Superintendent Thompson also serves as the Officer in Charge for Tactical Troop operations within the National Capital Region. Superintendent Thompson has and continues to serve on national and international committees impacting the Canadian police and criminal justice environment. He presently serves on the Algonquin College and Cite Collegiale Police Foundations Program Advisory Committees. Superintendent Thompson holds a Certificate in Adult Education, St. Francis Xavier University and a Bachelor of Arts
(Psychology), University of Regina. He also holds a Certificate of General Police Studies from the Canadian Police College and is also a registered Dispute Resolution Mediator. Superintendent Thompson was awarded the RCMP Long Service Medal in 1992 and Silver Clasp in 2002. In 2003 Superintendent Thompson received the Commander Designation from the Republique Française Gendarmerie Nationale - France.
